Multifunctional Centre and Rowing Club in Lombardy

architecture-design · 2026-05-20

Giulia de Appolonia has designed a multifunctional centre and rowing club in Lombardy, Italy. The project integrates urban and natural landscapes on a site adjacent to the municipal headquarters, divided by a road and bridge over the Ticino River. The design treats roofs as a fifth facade due to high visibility. The central concept is a void serving as a spatial and visual connector between two volumes. Open spaces include a tree-lined boulevard linking the main square to the town hall, ramps descending to the river, parking areas, a 1,000 m² event plaza, and public circulation zones. The two buildings—a multipurpose hall for 450 people and the rowing club—share identical dimensions but contrast in identity: one is light, white, and suspended; the other dark, solid, and grounded, creating architectural tension between urban and natural realms.
