Mulhouse Biennial's Apocalyptic Vision: This Is the End
The 4th Biennale de la photographie de Mulhouse, titled This Is the End and curated by Anne Immelé, runs from September 11, 2020 to January 10, 2021 across multiple venues. The exhibition explores themes of apocalypse and human extinction through photography. At the Musée des beaux-arts, Geert Goiris and Alain Willaume present vast landscapes where human presence is reduced to remnants. Nolwenn Brod's images from Poland, influenced by Witold Gombrowicz, depict urban scenes in sepia tones suggesting a world past its future. Serge Lhermitte's installation at the Chapelle Saint-Jean mimics assembly-line work, referencing workers from a Saint-Nazaire factory and abandoned Michelin test tracks. Benoît Linder's series at the library observes time's effect on his parents' home. Isabelle Giovacchini's series 'Quand fond la neige' shows Mercantour lakes chemically erased from landscapes. Thérèse Verrat and Vincent Toussaint's cosmic images of eclipses and nebulae contextualize human experience within geological time. Jessica Auer and Guillaume Collignon document tourism's impact in Iceland and the Alps. Jean-Baptiste Grangier's installation at the museum features a rocket launching from Baikonur, a rectangular footprint in sand, and a partially burned world map, suggesting exploration as destruction.
