Muji unveils Kengo Kuma-designed prefab home in Kamakura
Japanese minimalist brand Muji has revealed a new prefabricated house prototype called Window House, designed by architect Kengo Kuma. Located in the coastal city of Kamakura, Kanagawa Prefecture, the two-story, 80-square-meter home features a pitched roof, white walls, and windows on all four sides. The design adapts a 2008 project Kuma originally developed for Muji. To test the prototype, Muji will invite one person—along with their family or chosen housemates—to live in the house for two years. Muji has previously experimented with prefab housing, including the Vertical House for tight urban spaces and three vacation homes by designers Konstantin Grcic, Jasper Morrison, and Naoto Fukasawa. Kuma also designed the Tree House for Muji in 2009. The initiative follows a similar move by Ikea, which offers DIY prefab homes.
