Muji Made exhibition reimagines everyday objects at Melbourne Design Week
Japanese lifestyle brand Muji invited seven Australian architects and designers to reinterpret its classic products for a three-day exhibition titled Muji Made, held from 22 to 24 May 2026 at Gertrude Glasshouse gallery in Collingwood during Melbourne Design Week. Curated by art director Marsha Golemac and designer Colby Vexler, the show featured new works alongside Muji's own products, emphasizing simplicity, utility, and clarity. Melbourne studio A22a created a side table from stacked pressed layers of a reclaimed cotton duvet cover without frame or hardware. Designer Charlie White turned Muji's timber shoehorns into a table lamp with a pitched lampshade inspired by pangolin scales. Architecture practice All Days used Muji's stainless steel unit shelving to produce the modular Monday Chair and the Thursday Cabinet with custom fibreglass shelves and a deep socket hinge. Swiss-Australian artist Olivia Bossy focused on food-related products, including a delicate shelf made from chopsticks bound by elastic hair bands that could hold only one small plate, and ravioli made from sponges as an art piece. Co-curator Vexler stacked twenty white-grey storage case drawers on wheels to celebrate the ritual of organizing. Photography by Pier Carthew.
