Mudec opens restoration lab to public for Gino Marotta's giraffe sculpture
Mudec in Milan has kicked off a public restoration initiative for Gino Marotta's "Giraffa Artificiale," a striking three-meter sculpture made of transparent pink PMMA back in 1973. This effort is supported by the Getty Conservation Institute from Los Angeles and the Centro Conservazione e Restauro La Venaria Reale. The project aims to tackle the challenges of preserving plastic, focusing on restoring its clarity and finding matching materials. Visitors can check out the restoration lab on March 16 and 30, and April 13, with insights from Anna Laganà (GCI) and Marco Demmelbauer (CCR). A workshop, "La Conservazione della plastica," is scheduled for March 17 and 31, and April 14. Once restored, the sculpture will be showcased at the Museo di Storia Naturale di Milano as part of the Rainbow program, with free admission. Gino Marotta (1935–2012) was an Italian artist known for his creative use of materials, exploring the interplay between natural and artificial, and he worked alongside Carmelo Bene in the film and theater scene.
