MUDEC Milan opens storage tours every last Saturday of the month

cultural-heritage · 2026-04-26

Starting February 22, 2025, the Museo delle Culture di Milano (MUDEC) will offer regular guided tours of its open storage every last Saturday of the month. The museum, housed in a David Chipperfield-designed building in Via Tortona, was founded in 2015 to showcase collections assembled during the 20th century in the Castello Sforzesco deposits. Its ground-floor storage, organized by geographic-cultural and typological-stylistic criteria, holds about 9,000 pieces dating from 1200 BCE to the 1900s, of which only around 500 are on display. The new fixed schedule is co-designed with the Touring Club Italiano and the Municipality of Milan under the national active citizenship project "Aperti per Voi." Visits are limited to groups of nine people, with 30-minute slots starting at 3:30 PM. The storage includes African ethnographic collections from the Italian colonial period in East Africa, sub-Saharan masks and sculptures, Chinese terracottas and porcelains from Tang to Ming dynasties, over 1,500 Japanese artifacts (porcelains, textiles, bronzes, arms, lacquers, ivories), pre-Hispanic and Amerindian objects, Islamic carpets, and a collection of 124 hats and fans from the 19th and 20th centuries worldwide. Study appointments remain available.
