MSN Warsaw Opens Permanent Home with Inaugural Exhibition

exhibition · 2026-04-24

In October 2024, the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw (MSN) officially opened its permanent location at the northeastern corner of Plac Defilad, a site established in the 1950s. It remained mostly vacant until February 2025, when it debuted its first exhibition, 'The Impermanent: Four Takes on the Collection,' showcasing 4,300 artworks from both international and regional artists dating from the 1950s onward. The inaugural weekend attracted over 14,000 visitors. The museum's minimalist architecture has been likened to IKEA, and its position across from the Stalinist Palace of Culture encourages thoughtful discussions. Controversies have arisen due to a three-year partnership with Audi and the displacement of local vendors. The exhibition features works by artists such as Alina Szapocznikow, Tau Lewis, and Cathy Wilkes, divided into four thematic sections. MSN has been active since 2005, initially operating from a former furniture store and later from a pavilion by the Vistula River. The museum's launch follows the recent electoral defeat of Poland's long-standing rightwing government, which had significantly impacted the cultural landscape. This article was authored by Phoebe Blatton and appeared in the April 2025 edition of ArtReview.
