MRGEN Framework Uses LLMs to Simplify Mixed Reality Educational Content Creation

ai-technology · 2026-04-20

A conceptual framework called MRGEN has been developed to help teachers create mixed reality learning activities without requiring technical expertise. The framework leverages large language models to power authoring tools specifically designed for educational purposes. MRGEN operates across three key dimensions: Learning Objectives, MR Modality, and Generative AI Assistance. To test the framework's effectiveness, researchers built a prototype using the open-source MIXAP authoring platform. A user study involving 24 participants demonstrated significant improvements in workflow efficiency. Task completion times were reduced by an average of 36% when using the LLM-powered tools. Over 90% of study participants reported that the AI assistance was valuable for brainstorming ideas, organizing content structure, and ensuring alignment with educational goals. These results indicate strong potential for future AI-enhanced mixed reality authoring systems in educational settings. The framework specifically targets mobile devices including tablets and smartphones as delivery platforms for MR experiences.
