Mozart's Life and Letters Revealed at Morgan Library Exhibition
The Morgan Library & Museum in New York presents "Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart: Treasures from the Mozarteum Foundation of Salzburg," an exhibition of ephemera from the composer's life, including his childhood violin, original sketches for "The Magic Flute" (1791), and correspondence. The show features Mozart's earliest compositions from 1761, a serenade manuscript for "Eine kleine Nachtmusik" (1787), and letters to his cousin Maria Anna Thekla Mozart ("Bäsle") with scatological humor censored in the 19th and 20th centuries. Portraits of prince-archbishops and a copperplate engraving of the Mozart family (1764) by Jean-Baptiste Delafosse after Carmontelle are included. The exhibition is organized in collaboration with the International Mozarteum Foundation, Salzburg, and curated by Robinson McClellan, Deborah Gatewood, Armin Brinzing, Linus Klumpner, and Christopher J. Salmon. It runs through May 31 at 225 Madison Avenue.
