Mountain bivouacs: essential architecture for extreme environments

architecture-design · 2026-04-26

Mountain bivouacs offer limited protection for a small number of individuals, often lacking both management and food supplies. These projects are becoming increasingly appealing to architects focused on sustainable design. The "Pensare come una montagna" initiative at GAMeC di Bergamo includes seminars and an exhibition by Andrea Cassi and Michele Versaci, highlighting the upcoming Aldo Frattini bivouac in the Orobie Alps. The Bivacco della Contemplazione, located in Val Gabbiolo, Trentino, was crafted by SSA Simone Subissati Architects. Opened on September 4, 2016, the Bivacco Vigolana stands at 2030 meters. Studio Mimeus designed the Rifugio Pradidali, while the Bivacco Brédy in Valle di Vertosan was a YACademy competition winner. The Bivacco Edoardo Camardella, at 3357 meters, features a weather station. In Austria, the Voisthaler Hut is constructed from untreated wood.
