Mount Tomah Botanical Garden: Colonial History and Climate Change in Australia
Located 100 km west of Sydney Bay in Australia’s Blue Mountains, the Mount Tomah Botanical Garden is witnessing an extraordinary display of autumn colors, a phenomenon attributed to climate change. Following severe summer conditions, staff observed plants exhibiting unusual behavior. The garden, home to both evergreen and deciduous trees, showcases vibrant hues enhanced by increased rainfall and sunny weather. Designated a World Heritage Area by UNESCO in 2000, its colonial roots trace back to 1804 with explorer George Caley, who played a key role for the Darugunpe Aboriginal people. The British Crown granted land to Susannah Bowen in 1830, and in 1935, botanists Effie and Alfred Louis Brunet founded a nursery. Miss Brunet transferred the land to the Crown on August 7, 1970. Among its diverse species is the endangered Wollemi pine, first identified in 1994.
