Mounira Al Solh on Her Artes Mundi 10 Project and the Power of Community
Mounira Al Solh has been nominated as one of seven contenders for the 10th edition of Artes Mundi, in collaboration with the Bagri Foundation. Her exhibition at the National Museum Cardiff, running until 25 February, features elements from her ongoing series I Strongly Believe In Our Right to be Frivolous (2012–), a tent that has been disassembled and embroidered with women from Lebanon and the Netherlands, a sound piece created with the Oasis One World Choir, and an edition of NOA (Not Only Arabic) magazine. The drawings, initiated during the 2011 Syrian revolution, capture her interactions with refugees in Lebanon. Al Solh aims to utilize any prize funds to aid local organizations in Cardiff, further her series, create an outdoor tent, and develop NOA issue 5 focusing on lost places in Lebanon. She co-manages Modka Beireot in both the Netherlands and Beirut. The winner will be revealed on 25 January, with ArtReview serving as a media partner.
