Moscow Photobiennale 2006: Voyage, Seduction, Conflict
From March 23 to May 31, 2006, the sixth edition of the Photobiennale took place, marking a decade of the Month of Photography in Moscow. Hosted by Olga Sviblova at the Maison de la photographie de Moscou, the event showcased retrospectives of notable photographers such as Brassai, Jan Saudek, and Bettina Rheims, alongside exhibitions featuring Sebastião Salgado, Nan Goldin, and Federico Patellani. The themes of the biennale included voyage, seduction, and conflict, with war photography presented by Christine Spengler, Simon Norfolk, James Nachtwey, and Anthony Suau. While it emphasized Dutch, Chinese, and French photography, Russian artists often received less attention. Highlights included Alaya Esipovich's 'Bonheur' and a historical collection by Alexis and Edouard Zhigaylov. The Maison de la photographie moved locations, and the International School of Photography and Multimedia was launched. Critic Bernard Marcelis remarked on the inconsistent quality of contemporary Russian photography.
