Moscow Biennale 2019 Partners with Albertina Museum, Features 40 Artists
The 8th Moscow International Biennale of Contemporary Art, overseen by curator Dmitri Tcherniakov, showcases works from 40 artists worldwide. In a first-time collaboration, the Albertina Museum in Vienna contributes 20th-century masterpieces that have inspired new creations by Russian artists. Architect Sergei Tchoban has crafted an intricate installation centered on a 'City of Artists' theme, featuring distinct 'buildings' and 'squares' with diverse lighting. The exhibition brings together international figures such as Valie Export, Gerhard Richter, and Zhang Huan alongside Russian talents like Evgenia Buravleva and Alexey Luka, who have produced new pieces for the event. Alexey Luka’s installation, a wobbly structure of tiles and wood, interacts with Zhang Huan’s incense ash works, both reflecting on modern life. A key video piece by Azerbaijani artist Leyla delves into the connection between humanity and nature through geometric designs and sacred texts. Julia Muzikantskaya, president of the Biennale, highlighted the unique luminous exhibition pathway and the interaction between Russian and global artists. The event continues until February 2020. Critics have remarked that it resembles a large exhibition rather than a traditional biennale but commend its efforts to engage young audiences with contemporary art and introduce 20th-century masters to a region that is currently less receptive to experimental work.
