Mosaic Floor Discovered at Pompeii's Stabian Baths

cultural-heritage · 2026-04-27

A mosaic floor from a pre-62 AD house, later converted into the Stabian Baths, has been unearthed at Pompeii. The white mosaic with a black border and a central polychrome geometric emblem was found beneath the floor level of tabernae along the Vicolo del Lupanare, about half a meter deep. The excavation is a collaboration between the Archaeological Park of Pompeii, Freie Universität Berlin, and the University of Naples L'Orientale. Director Gabriel Zuchtriegel stated the find proves much remains to be discovered in already excavated areas. The emblem features black, white, and green tesserae arranged in a geometric pattern with perspective cubes.
