Morocco Gaming Expo aims to make Morocco a video game pioneer in Africa
The third edition of the Morocco Gaming Expo (MGE) took place in Rabat, drawing students, professionals, and institutions united in their ambition to position Morocco as a video game pioneer in Africa. The event featured an esports arena, developer booths, streaming zones, cosplay contests, and a professional conference stage. Organizers expected 100,000 visitors this year, with sponsors including Orange, HyperX, and Bank of Africa. Ubisoft had established a branch in Casablanca in 1998 but later closed it. Local games showcased included Tbourida, inspired by traditional equestrian sport, and Cazafonia, a Moroccan GTA-style game based on a Casablanca artist's life. Student Mahmoud El Seiwy presented L'Guerrab, a 2D action-platformer featuring a cultural icon who distributes water. Developers like June Studio fund their projects through service work for Western studios. The expo highlighted the potential of Moroccan and African stories in gaming, though finished games on platforms like Steam are still years away.
