Morimado House by Yosuke Tomiya Frames Hokkaido Forest with Split-Level Timber Design

Morimado House, a private residence in Hokkaido, Japan, was crafted by Yosuke Tomiya Architectural Design to harmonize with the dense forest located at the back of the property. Instead of merely serving as a backdrop, the forest is actively incorporated through strategically placed openings that highlight seasonal transformations. Inside, a series of split-level areas link various functions while ensuring visual cohesion, featuring a double-height living room, a forest-facing window seat, and interconnected levels that foster family engagement. With ample natural light from large openings and high windows, the design creates vibrant light patterns. The timber framework and well-insulated envelope are ideal for Hokkaido’s harsh climate, while simple materials like natural wood and white walls create a serene setting for the forest’s evolving hues. The layout strikes a balance between openness and privacy, directing views toward the landscape while minimizing visibility from nearby homes. An arched opening enhances the connection between the living area and the forest, and an open staircase links the different levels while framing scenic views.
