Mori Art Museum Names Kataoka Mami as New Director, Nanjo Fumio Retires After 17 Years

On 1 January 2020, Tokyo's Mori Art Museum will see a change in leadership, as Kataoka Mami, the current deputy director and chief curator, steps into the role of director. She will take over from Nanjo Fumio, who is retiring after 17 years at the helm. Throughout his leadership, Nanjo enhanced the museum's global outlook and bolstered partnerships with other art institutions. He will continue to contribute as a senior advisor. Kataoka has been instrumental in curating major exhibitions for artists like Ai Wei Wei (2009/2012–14), Aida Makoto (2012), N.S. Harsha (2017), and Shiota Chiharu (2019–). Additionally, she was the artistic director for the Sydney Biennale in 2018. This news was announced on 20 September 2019.
