More Than Shelters' DOMO: Modular Housing for Refugees
German company More Than Shelters, founded in Hamburg in 2012, has developed DOMO, a modular housing system for refugees and displaced people. Launched in summer 2015, DOMO is designed to last up to ten years, far exceeding traditional tents that degrade in 6-10 months. The structure uses sandbags, an aluminum frame, PVC flooring, and breathable cotton skin, with a 2.60m ceiling height and 23 sqm area. Each module weighs up to 145 kg, can be assembled and disassembled easily, and accommodates up to six people. The design addresses UN statistics projecting nearly 3 billion people living in precarious conditions by 2050, particularly in refugee camps that often last 20 years with stays averaging 12 years.
