Mordant Family’s Quattro Gatti Gin Becomes Venice Biennale’s Official Spirit
During the pandemic, the Mordant family—Simon, Catriona, Brielle, and Angus—quarantined in Umbria and began making gin from wild juniper on their land. They produced 502 bottles initially, then won a triple-gold medal at the World Gin Awards. The family decided to go commercial, becoming the first gin producers in Umbria. With deep ties to the Venice Biennale (Simon served as Australia’s commissioner twice and helped redevelop the Australian pavilion), they became the Biennale’s first spirits sponsor for Koyo Kouoh’s edition. The official cocktail, developed with the St. Regis Venice bar team, uses their olive grove gin, hibiscus syrup, lemon, and sparkling grapefruit juice.
