award · 2026-05-05

At the 89th Academy Awards on February 26, 2017, Moonlight won Best Picture after a historic envelope mix-up. Presenter Warren Beatty was given the wrong envelope, leading La La Land producers to begin their acceptance speech before the error was corrected live. Moonlight, directed by Barry Jenkins, became the first film with an all-black cast and the first LGBTQ+ film to win Best Picture. The film had premiered at the Venice Film Festival in September 2016. La La Land, directed by Damien Chazelle, won six Oscars including Best Director and Best Actress for Emma Stone. The Iranian film The Client (Forushandeh) by Asghar Farhadi won Best Foreign Language Film; Farhadi was absent due to President Donald Trump's travel ban. Italy's Fuocoammare by Gianfranco Rosi received no awards. Alessandro Bertolazzi won Best Makeup and Hairstyling for Suicide Squad, dedicating the award to immigrants. The ceremony took place at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood.
