Moon Kyungwon & Jeon Joonho Present Apocalyptic Film Installation for Korean Pavilion at 2015 Venice Biennale

Moon Kyungwon and Jeon Joonho are creating a multi-channel film installation for the Korean Pavilion at the 2015 Venice Biennale, responding to the architectural constraints of the Giardini venue. Their project, an extension of their ongoing News from Nowhere series, envisions a post-apocalyptic Earth where Venice is submerged and the Giardini no longer functions as an art site. The film follows a protagonist encountering bizarre incidents to explore art's fundamental role. Commissioner and curator Sook-Kyung Lee selected the artists based on shared vision, though the duo does not see themselves as representing Korea. The Korean Pavilion, established through efforts by the late Nam June Paik, inspires challenges for Korean artists. The installation builds on previous iterations shown at dOCUMENTA (13) in Kassel in 2012 and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2013, with plans to travel to Migros Museum für Gegenwartskunst in Zurich in summer 2015. The artists approach this exhibition similarly to others, focusing on sincerity without special preparations for Biennale audiences.
