Montecristo Island Opens to 2,000 Visitors in 2025
In 2025, Montecristo, the fourth-largest island in the Tuscan Archipelago, will welcome 2,000 visitors. This biodiversity reserve, spanning over 10 square kilometers and situated 63 kilometers from Livorno, has stringent access rules. It was designated a Nature Reserve in 1971 and later became a Biogenetic Nature Reserve in 1988, falling under the Tuscan Archipelago National Park. Once a monastic and military site, George Watson Taylor acquired it in 1852, and the Italian State later reclaimed it for a penal colony from 1874 to 1884. Reservations will be available starting January 27, 2025, on the park's website, allowing 75 visitors daily from March 22 to September 21 at €140 each, with special excursions on April 5 and September 7 for €180.
