Monte Verità: Utopian Artists' Colony Explored in Florence Exhibition
The Museo Novecento in Florence presents a three-part exhibition on Monte Verità, the early 20th-century utopian artists' colony in Canton Ticino, Switzerland. Curated by Sergio Risaliti, the show traces the colony's philosophical origins, architectural development, and dance art. Founded around 1900 by Henri Oedenkoven, Karl Gräser, and others on Monte Monescia, the colony practiced veganism, heliotherapy, nudism, gymnastics, dance, and meditation as part of the Lebensreform (life reform) movement. Architect Mario Botta called it "the laboratory of one of the most radical artistic and social utopias of the era." The colony anticipated contemporary themes of ecological living, vegetarian culture, and body care. Monte Verità became property of the Republic and Canton Ticino in 1964 per the will of Baron Eduard von der Heydt, who wanted it used for high-level artistic and cultural activities. The Fondazione Monte Verità was established in 1989 and now manages the conference and cultural center.
