Mont Saint-Michel Abbey celebrates 1,000 years in 2023

cultural-heritage · 2026-04-27

Mont Saint-Michel, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1979 and one of France's most visited landmarks, marks its millennium in 2023. The abbey's foundation legend dates to 708 AD when the Archangel Michael commanded Bishop Oberto of Avranches to build a church on a 92-meter rock in Normandy. Historical records indicate the first oratory was consecrated around the year 1000, with Abbot Hildebert ordering a larger abbey in 1023 to accommodate pilgrims. The complex features Gothic and Romanesque architecture, fortified with walls, towers, and bastions due to its strategic location. King Louis XI established an Order of Knights on the island in the late 15th century. A year-long program includes the exhibition "Art, Architecture and Devotion at Mont-Saint-Michel Abbey (1023-2023)" running until November 5, showcasing projects, documents, furniture, artworks, ancient capitals, and goldsmith pieces. On June 23, a light show for the Millennium Solstice will be visible from the beach. Throughout July and August, the abbey offers nighttime visits with light and sound installations. Events continue through October with concerts, dance performances, and conferences, including a June 16 talk on the first abbey's historical reconstruction.
