Monotype Launches Gotham Variable for 25th Anniversary of Iconic Typeface

publication · 2026-05-16

Monotype Imaging Inc. has released Gotham Variable, a variable font system for the iconic Gotham typeface, marking its 25th anniversary. The typeface first appeared on the cover of Gentleman Quarterly (GQ) in January 2001, designed by Jonathan Hoefler and Tobias Frere-Jones. Inspired by New York City vernacular lettering—from paint, plaster, neon, glass, and steel—Gotham became ubiquitous across branding, media, and politics, used by Netflix, Coca-Cola, Spotify, Chanel, Taco Bell, Saturday Night Live, the US Postal Service, and Barack Obama's 2008 presidential campaign. In 2004, it was engraved in the cornerstone of One World Trade Center, and by 2011, it entered MoMA's permanent collection. Gotham Variable adds 54 new intermediate styles to the existing 66, offering continuous control over weight and width in a single font file, with expanded language support including Vietnamese and enhanced Cyrillic and Bulgarian. Lead designer Sara Soskolne, executive creative director at Monotype, led the project, aiming to adapt the typeface for AI-assisted and responsive design workflows. The release positions Gotham as a responsive design system for contemporary brands, interfaces, and algorithmically generated outputs.
