Monotype and Bruce Mau Design Launch Climate-Focused Typography Project Hot & Wet

digital · 2026-04-21

Monotype has launched Hot & Wet, a typography project developed in collaboration with Bruce Mau Design. This initiative forms part of Monotype's Re: Vision 2025 campaign, which examines how design addresses major global issues, with climate as the current focus. The project is led by Monotype's Executive Creative Director Phil Garnham. At its core is Climate Chronicle, a microsite that presents future headlines depicting environmental progress as if it has already occurred, paired with practical sustainable design tips. The project utilizes the Macklin™ Variable typeface superfamily, chosen for its 54 styles within a single variable system to reduce digital load and energy consumption. A key concept is that small technical decisions in design, such as font selection and file efficiency, can scale to create meaningful environmental impact across millions of digital touchpoints. The project aims to shift climate narratives from dystopian fear to constructive optimism, positioning design as a catalyst for influencing perception and behavior. It argues that typography, as encoded culture, can be a subtle but powerful tool when used with intention.
