Monitor Gallery Opens New Rome Space with 'Paura della pittura'

exhibition · 2026-04-27

Monitor Gallery inaugurates its new location in Rome's San Lorenzo district with the group exhibition 'Paura della pittura,' curated by Gianni and Giuseppe Garrera. The show draws inspiration from a 1942 essay by Renato Guttuso published in the magazine 'Prospettive,' directed by Curzio Malaparte, which explored the fear of being in or out of fashion. The curators juxtapose works from their collection—including pieces by Ugo Celada da Virgilio, Virgilio Guzzi, Walter Lazzaro, and Ada Schalk—with contemporary works by gallery artists Thomas Braida, Matteo Fato, Elisa Montessori, and Nicola Samorì. The exhibition is conceived as a 'sacra conversazione' between old and modern, featuring figurative, domestic-scale paintings. Notable works include Samorì's 'Dormitio' (2023) and Fato's 'Florilegio 20' (2023). The show opened in March 2023.
