Monique Frydman's Inside/Out at Passage de Retz
Monique Frydman presents Inside/Out at Passage de Retz in Paris from April 27 to June 12, a dynamic survey from 1992 to the present. The exhibition avoids a traditional retrospective format, instead offering a walk-through that emphasizes color interactions and materiality. Frydman's technique involves rubbing pastel blocks on damp linen over cords and ropes, creating abstract impressions without brushes. Influenced by painters such as El Greco, Goya, Velázquez, Degas, Cézanne, Bonnard, Matisse, Reinhardt, Kelly, and Rothko, as well as Joan Mitchell, Jacques Lacan's seminars, and the feminist movement, she prioritizes emotion and sensory experience. The show includes works like the Dames de nage (1992), Tondos, Orbes, Ellipses, Sombres, Damiers, and recent series Saisons avec Bonnard (2009-2010) and Witness (2010-2011). Witness introduces assemblages of canvas and brick, breaking the geometric unity of the painting. Frydman is scheduled to exhibit at the circular glass architecture of the Kanazawa Museum of Contemporary Art in Japan later this year.
