Monika Zawadzki's 'Tent and Fireplace' Installation Explores Community and Primal Forms at Warsaw's Kordegarda Gallery

exhibition · 2026-04-19

Monika Zawadzki presented her exhibition 'Tent and Fireplace' at Warsaw's Kordegarda Gallery from October 11 to November 4, 2012. Curated by Marta Czyż, the installation featured a black pyramid-shaped tent and a smaller campfire, both constructed from painted wood and connected by twine. A polyurethane 'Connector' block stood between them, creating a sense of separation and longing rather than domestic warmth. Zawadzki's work references archaic community rituals while questioning modern social structures, architecture, law, and institutions. Her graphic language, developed during the 2008 'Human and Animals Rights' cycle, employs black-and-white contrasts and simplified silhouettes that blend human and animal forms. Other pieces included 'Wet Table,' with milk oozing through plastic, and 'Circle Cow's Head Two Cubes,' which critiques meat consumption. Materials like polyurethane, rough wood, hemp cord, and organic milk evoke primal civilization roots, while transparent plastic appears in works like 'Discomfort' (2011) and 'Mud.' Zawadzki, who has contributed to Karol Radziszewski's DIK FAGAZINE, avoids overt political commentary, focusing instead on pure artistic forms that impact viewer consciousness. The exhibition addressed themes of community, emancipation, and the tensions preventing ideal social structures, with the tent and fireplace symbolizing enduring longing.
