Monika Sosnowska's Labyrinthine Installations at 2007 Venice Biennale

Monika Sosnowska's installation for the Polish Pavilion at the 52nd Venice Biennale in 2007 features a steel construction representing a typical modernist building from 1960s-70s Poland, referencing the large-scale housing blocks of the communist era. The work, too large for the historic pavilion, appears compressed and crushed as if the structure met resistance while expanding. Sosnowska's practice since 2004 has shifted from complex physical interventions to simpler forms that alter spatial perception, as seen at Serpentine Gallery (2004) and MoMA (2006). Her installations often use rudimentary materials, monochrome palettes, and disorienting sound, evoking everyday architecture like hospitals or dollhouses. She cites influences including Lewis Carroll, Franz Kafka, minimal art, and Polish abstraction.
