Monika Kinley, Outsider Art Champion and Collector, Dies at 89
Monika Kinley, who co-founded the Musgrave Kinley Outsider Art Collection with partner Victor Musgrave after meeting him in 1977, died on 9 March 2014. She curated more than 30 exhibitions internationally and was a staunch defender of outsider art's integrity. Born in Berlin, she escaped Nazi persecution with her Austrian-Jewish family before World War II, studying art in Hull and later moving to London where she married painter Peter Kinley. Her art dealing career included work with Waddington and the Grosvenor Gallery before operating from her own flat following her husband's death. For years, Kinley sought a permanent institution for the collection's 800 works by artists including Henry Darger, Madge Gill, and Albert Louden. After a decade-long loan to IMMA in Dublin, the collection was gifted to Manchester's Whitworth Art Gallery, which is reopening after a major redevelopment. In 2012, she received an OBE for services to art.
