Mônica Nador's JAMAC Collective Transforms São Paulo Periphery Through Socially Engaged Art
Since 2003, Mônica Nador has been residing in Jardim Miriam, São Paulo, where she established the Jardim Miriam Arte Clube (JAMAC). This collective merges artistic expression with social activism and has gained acclaim worldwide. Nador instructs participants in stencil techniques, using designs they select. Her depiction of Subcomandante Marcos has been displayed both in São Paulo and internationally. In 2014, Nador and JAMAC organized workshops for women from the Jardim São Remo favela, resulting in fabric prints that were exhibited at an opening on January 25, 2015. Since 2010, JAMAC has depended on irregular funding of R$60,000 annually. In 2015, they engaged in projects in Puerto Rico and Toulouse, France. Nador asserts that "everyone is an artist," echoing Beuys's philosophy.
