Mongolian Artist E. Jantsankhorol Discusses Venice Biennale Pavilion and Nomadic Approach

E. Jantsankhorol will represent Mongolia at the 2019 Venice Biennale with a pavilion located in Calle del Forno. Performances will occur in various public spaces throughout Venice. The artist plans to create a site-specific environment incorporating Mongolian throat singing as a sound component. Jantsankhorol describes preparing sketches and plans but expects to adjust and improvise on-site, influenced by Venice's unique context which evokes nomadic thinking from his Mongolian upbringing. He views representing his country as an honor but focuses on the work itself. While striving for transnational communication through art, Jantsankhorol draws inspiration from Mongolian cultural traditions, embracing the tension between local and global perspectives. He believes Mongolia's national pavilion will significantly impact the country's developing contemporary art scene, particularly inspiring younger artists to engage internationally. Having attended the 2015 Biennale, Jantsankhorol was struck by Venice's unconventional exhibition venues with their crooked walls and uneven floors, contrasting with typical white cube spaces. The 2019 Venice Biennale runs from May 11 to November 24.
