Monet's 'Impression, Sunrise' to Travel to Shanghai for September Exhibition

exhibition · 2026-04-27

Claude Monet's iconic 1872 painting 'Impression, Sunrise'—widely credited with giving Impressionism its name—will be loaned to the One Art Museum in Shanghai for an exhibition opening September 17. The work, part of the Musée Marmottan Monet collection in Paris, will be joined by eight other Monet paintings from the same museum. The show will also feature prints by Japanese artists Utagawa Hiroshige and Katsushika Hokusai, creating a dialogue between the father of Impressionism and ukiyo-e masters. Marianne Mathieu, scientific director of the Musée Marmottan Monet, told Le Figaro that the partnership with One Art Museum signals a resumption of international museum collaborations after numerous pandemic-related cancellations and delays. The painting depicts the port of Le Havre in Normandy, where Monet spent his childhood, and was first exhibited at the legendary 1874 Impressionist exhibition held in photographer Nadar's studio at 35 Boulevard des Capucines in Paris.
