Monet-Mitchell: A Visual Dialogue Between Water Lilies and Abstract Expressionism at Fondation Louis Vuitton
The Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris will host the exhibition 'Monet-Mitchell' from October 5, 2022, to February 27, 2023, juxtaposing Claude Monet's late Water Lilies series (1914-1926) with works by American painter Joan Mitchell (died 1992). The show features 36 works by Monet, including 25 large canvases from the Musée Marmottan Monet, and 24 paintings by Mitchell. It explores how both artists responded to the same landscape—the banks of the Seine in Île-de-France—despite working decades apart. Mitchell moved to Vétheuil in 1968, near where Monet lived from 1878 to 1881. The exhibition includes a retrospective of Mitchell's work in the lower level of Frank Gehry's building. Curated as a visual dialogue, it highlights correspondences in their painterly approaches: Monet's 'sensations' and Mitchell's 'feelings' toward nature. Approximately 60 emblematic works trace thematic and visual parallels.
