Monet and Boudin: A Master and His Pupil in Madrid

exhibition · 2026-05-04

The Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza in Madrid presents the exhibition 'Monet / Boudin', running from June 26 to September 30, 2018. The show explores the relationship between Claude Monet and his mentor Eugène Boudin, who was 16 years older and a pioneer of plein-air painting before Monet. Boudin, nicknamed the 'king of skies' for his mastery of color and light, recognized Monet's potential while the latter was drawing caricatures in Paris and encouraged him to paint on the beach at Trouville, Normandy. The exhibition features over 100 works from both artists, loaned by institutions including the Musée d'Orsay in Paris, the National Gallery in London, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Paintings are displayed side by side to allow visitors to compare their artistic paths and reveal Boudin's influence on the young Monet's style and their shared interests at the dawn of Impressionism.
