Mondrian and De Stijl Retrospective at Museo Reina Sofía in Madrid

exhibition · 2026-04-27

The Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid presents a comprehensive exhibition titled "Mondrian y De Stijl," running until March 1, 2021. Curated by Hans Janssen in collaboration with the Stichting Kunstmuseum in The Hague, the show traces Piet Mondrian's evolution from figurative painter to pioneer of abstraction, featuring 35 works by Mondrian and about 60 pieces by key De Stijl artists such as Theo van Doesburg, Piet Klaarhammer, and Vilmos Huszar. The exhibition includes paintings, interior design sketches, architectural maquettes, and design objects, notably a recreation of the children's room for Villa Arendshoeve in Voorburg. It highlights Mondrian's early figurative works like "Still Life with Oranges" (1900) and "Dead Hare" (1891), his transition through Cubism influenced by Picasso and Braque, and his mature Neoplasticism characterized by grids and primary colors. Two masterpieces from the Thyssen-Bornemisza collection, "Composition of Colors" (1931) and the unfinished "New York City 3" (1941), are on display. The exhibition also explores De Stijl's impact on Mondrian's path to abstraction and his influence on Latin American art in the second half of the 20th century.
