Monaco's Botanical Gardens: From Exotic Oasis to Zen Retreats
The Principality of Monaco boasts a rich botanical heritage, with the Jardin Exotique as a prime example. Perched on a cliff with panoramic bay views, this 15,000-square-meter garden is among the world's top 100, featuring thousands of cacti and succulents. Winter blooms (January–March) include South African Aloe and Crassula; summer (May–September) showcases American cacti. The site also contains the Grotta dell'osservatorio, a prehistoric cave route with stalactites and stalagmites. Monaco ranks second in Europe after Vienna for urban green space development, with 250,000 square meters of landscaped areas. Other notable gardens include the Japanese Garden by architect Yasuo Beppu (1990 Osaka floral exhibition prize), designed in Zen style with topiary, water features, and lanterns; the Princess Grace Rose Garden with over 300 rose varieties in Parc de Fontvieille; and the Saint Martin Gardens, the first public garden opened in the early 19th century. Museums like Villa Sauber and Villa Paloma, housing the Nouveau Musée National de Monaco, feature gardens with artworks by Jeppe Hein, Christodoulos Panayiotou, and Claire Fontaine.
