MOMENTUM 11 Biennale Announces Curators and Theme for 2021 Edition

festival-fair · 2026-04-27

The Norwegian biennale MOMENTUM has announced its 11th edition, scheduled for 2021, with a new venue on the island of Jeløya in Moss, Norway. The event is organized by Galleri F15 and will be curated by Théo-Mario Coppola, with Håkon Lillegraven as associate curator. The theme, titled "House of Commons," draws on the concept of "common good" formulated by Elinor Ostrom in the 1980s, aiming to address issues of capitalism, colonialism, racism, patriarchy, and gender norms. The biennale seeks to foster civil solidarity and equality, encouraging artists to explore new forms of proximity, sharing, and community engagement. Dag Aak Sveinar, director of Galleri F15 and MOMENTUM, expressed enthusiasm for Coppola's thematic guidelines focusing on horizontality and solidarity. Coppola, a curator and art critic known for his curatorial empathy and activism, has developed the concept of "affective communities" as collective strategies resisting contemporary forms of domination. The biennale will adopt an "existential" approach, questioning where we are, who we are, and what we are doing, aiming to build a shared future. MOMENTUM was founded in 1998 and has served as a platform for experimental exhibition formats in Nordic and international contexts.
