MoMA's Geo/Metric exhibition traces geometric abstraction from 1912 to present through prints and drawings
Between June 11 and August 18, 2008, The Museum of Modern Art in New York presented "Geo/Metric: Prints and Drawings from the Collection," under the curation of Starr Figura. This exhibition traced the development of geometric abstraction, starting from Kazimir Malevich's "Suprematist Manifesto" of 1915 and extending to modern pieces by Mark Grotjahn, born in 1968. Featured artists included Russian Constructivists like Malevich, Wassily Kandinsky, and Lyubov Popova, as well as Hélio Oiticica and Mary Heilmann. Notable works included Jo Baer's gouache pieces from 1965 and Dorothea Rockburne's "Locus" series from 1972. The exhibition aimed to highlight the ongoing significance of geometry, culminating with Grotjahn's "Butterfly" series, linking MoMA's historical and contemporary collections.
