MoMA's Design Innovations for Women Collection Tackles Taboo Topics
The Museum of Modern Art in New York launched Design Innovations for Women in August 2020, a collection of design objects addressing female sexuality, reproduction, and physical activity. Available online and at the SoHo store, the collection includes The Period Game, a board game funded via crowdfunding in 2019 that educates about menstruation. Chay Costello, MoMA's associate director of merchandising, stated the initiative aims to highlight design solutions for traditionally taboo topics. Other featured items include Danielle Baskin's Mute Hoodie for introverts, Austin Wolf Sothern's Nose Mask satirizing improper mask-wearing, a customizable New York Times puzzle, David Shrigley's Don't Touch Travel Tumbler, Paul Baut's Daycare at Home Watch for kids' schedules, Around the World City Radio for streaming global stations, Studio Unto's Color Gem wax crayons resembling minerals, Naver Corp's Clova Lamp that reads books aloud, and Monya's Error Cards featuring Windows XP error messages.
