MoMA's Cindy Sherman Retrospective Reaffirms Her Legacy

exhibition · 2026-04-23

In New York, the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) has launched the inaugural extensive retrospective of Cindy Sherman's artwork, curated by associate curator Eva Respini. This exhibition, occurring more than thirty years after MoMA's acquisition of a complete set of Untitled Film Stills, departs from traditional chronological displays. It features an array of works from different series, such as Clowns (2004) and Taxonomies of Femininity (2004-2008), alongside a dedicated space for Old Masters improvisations (1989-1990). The exhibition opens with a society portrait from 2008 and concludes with additional pieces from that series. Sherman's art critiques themes of patriarchy, the male gaze, and female identity, with insights from figures like Peter Schjeldahl and Rosalind Krauss, and includes a catalogue essay by John Waters.
