MoMA's 2009 Exhibition In & Out of Amsterdam Reassesses Conceptual Art Through Dutch Hub

exhibition · 2026-04-22

From July 19 to October 5, 2009, the Museum of Modern Art in New York showcased "In & Out of Amsterdam: Travels in Conceptual Art, 1960-1976," followed by "In & Out of Amsterdam: Art & Project Bulletin, 1968-1989," which ran from July 15 to November 9, 2009. Curated by Christophe Cherix, these exhibitions displayed 230 pieces from Art & Project's founders, Geert van Beijeren and Adriaan van Ravesteijn. The works of ten artists, including Bas Jan Ader and Lawrence Weiner, illustrated the movement, with travel as a central theme, featuring Dibbets's marked maps and LeWitt's map-based creations. The exhibitions aimed to reinforce MoMA's status as a leading authority in modern art by showcasing the boundaries of perspective and space in Conceptual art.
