MoMA reunites Matisse's 'The Red Studio' with all depicted works
Until September 10, 2022, the Museum of Modern Art in New York is showcasing 'Matisse: The Red Studio.' This exhibition highlights Henri Matisse's 1911 artwork 'The Red Studio' along with six other paintings, two sculptures, a terracotta item, and a ceramic plate, all created between 1898 and 1911. One painting is missing due to Matisse's request for its destruction prior to his passing in 1954. MoMA possesses the main painting and two additional works, while three pieces are on loan from the National Gallery of Denmark. The exhibition also features sketches and archival documents. Following its time in New York, it will move to SMK – The National Gallery of Denmark from October 13, 2022, to February 26, 2023. Notably, 'The Red Studio' was commissioned by Sergei Shchukin and is recognized as the first monochrome artwork in the history of art.
