MoMA PS1 to Host First US Survey of Teresa Margolles This Fall

exhibition · 2026-05-04

The first survey of Mexican artist Teresa Margolles in the United States will be showcased at MoMA PS1 in New York City, commencing on September 24 and continuing until spring 2027. Margolles, who trained as a forensic pathologist, utilizes organic and bodily materials sourced from crime scenes and homicide victims in her art. The exhibition will feature a 2026 iteration of her ongoing 'Air' series, which involves humidifying a gallery with water containing biodegradable substances from crime sites. Additionally, her piece 'El agua de la ciudad, Dallas' (2016) captures a performance that involved cleaning murder locations in Dallas. Simultaneously, the Museum of Modern Art will unveil her installation 'Aproximación al lugar de los hechos' starting September 17, where water drips onto hotplates. Curators Ana Janevski and Inés Katzenstein are co-organizing the survey, which will include significant works like 'La promesa' (2012), linked to the demolition of a house in Ciudad Juárez, and 'Receipt' (2020), which addresses the 2019 El Paso Walmart shooting. Margolles represented Mexico at the 53rd Venice Biennale in 2009 and received a commission for a Trafalgar Square plinth in 2024.
