architecture-design · 2026-04-20

The Museum of Modern Art presents 'The Project of Independence: Architectures of Decolonization in South Asia, 1947–1985,' featuring more than 200 architectural models, sketches, and audiovisual content from Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka. Spanning from the conclusion of British colonial rule to the 1985 South Asian Games in Dhaka, the exhibition illustrates how Western architectural styles were adapted to fit local cultures. Highlights include the Hall of Nations by Raj Rewal in New Delhi (1970–72) and Le Corbusier's Palace of Assembly in Chandigarh (1951–62). Prominent architects showcased are Muzharul Islam, Geoffrey Bawa, and Charles Correa. The exhibition is open until July 2, focusing on South Asian modernism and the preservation of brutalist architecture.
