Mole Vanvitelliana in Ancona Hosts Survey of 20th-Century Italian Avant-Gardes

exhibition · 2026-04-27

The Mole Vanvitelliana in Ancona is presenting 'Dal Futurismo all'Informale', a comprehensive survey of Italian art from the early 1900s to the 1960s. Conceived by the Mart of Rovereto, where it debuted in 2023, and curated by Alessandra Tiddia, the exhibition spans six decades of avant-garde movements. It opens with Futurism, featuring works by Fortunato Depero, Giacomo Balla, and Gino Severini, including a dialogue between Balla's tapestry and Depero's cloth inlays from his Casa d'Arte in Rovereto (1919). Aeropainters Tullio Crali and Mino Delle Site are also included. The interwar period highlights artists like Massimo Campigli, Carlo Carrà, Felice Casorati, Giorgio de Chirico, and Giorgio Morandi, who engaged with a 'return to order' through classical references. Subsequent sections cover abstract pioneers Carlo Belli and Mario Radice, then contrast Renato Guttuso's communist-inspired figuration with Emilio Vedova's gestural painting. The 1950s focus on sign and symbol through Giuseppe Capogrossi, Carla Accardi, and Gastone Novelli. The exhibition concludes with Alberto Burri's material investigations and Lucio Fontana's spatial concepts. The project was initiated by Vittorio Sgarbi and runs until April 1.
