Mokka-Milch-Eisbar Reopens on Berlin's Karl-Marx-Allee
The legendary Mokka-Milch-Eisbar, a cult ice cream pavilion from the GDR era on Berlin's Karl-Marx-Allee, reopens on Wednesday under new operators Natacha and Alexander Neumann, who have named it Mokka Milch. The bar, built in the early 1960s as part of the second construction phase of the boulevard, was a popular meeting spot and even inspired a 1969 hit song by Thomas Natschinski. After a heritage-sensitive renovation overseen by the State Monument Office, the building retains its distinctive large glass windows and yellow-tiled facade. The Neumanns, who never lived in the GDR, were drawn to the site's history as a social hub. The venue now functions as a restaurant, café, and bar, offering comfort food, coffee, and ice cream, with plans for Pilates classes, painting evenings, a coworking space, and meeting rooms. It joins the neighboring Kino International, which reopened in February after 18 months of restoration, as part of a revival of the boulevard. The Karl-Marx-Allee, a 1.8 km long listed monument, currently lacks vibrancy, but the new operators hope to attract visitors and collaborate with the cinema. The State Conservator Christoph Rauhut noted that the reopening is an important step for the area, and there are ongoing discussions to complete the originally planned pavilion buildings between Kino International and Alexanderplatz, though funding is not yet secured.
