Moki Cherry's First UK Solo Exhibition at ICA London

exhibition · 2026-04-24

Moki Cherry (née Karlsson), a Swedish artist who collaborated with her husband, jazz musician Don Cherry, is the subject of her first solo exhibition in the UK at the Institute of Contemporary Arts (ICA) in London, running through 3 September. The exhibition highlights her multidisciplinary practice, which blended textile design, painting, performance, and education within a countercultural, itinerant lifestyle from the 1960s onward. Cherry's work, often marginalized due to gendered biases against textiles and her holistic approach, is now being recognized posthumously. The show includes documentation, photographs, videos, notebooks, and works such as 'Communicate, How?' (1970), 'D.C' (1981), and 'Malkauns Raga' (1973), which exemplify her collaboration with Don Cherry and her exploration of sensory and linguistic limits. Later works like 'Breakfast at Tiffany's' (1979) and 'Not My Cup of Tea' (2006) address feminism and gender norms. Cherry died in 2009.
